CONFUSION MARS UPND MONGU ELECTIONS
UPND intra-party elections in Mongu on Sunday turned sour as one faction, endorsed and supported by Mongu central Member of Parliament Imakondo Mwilola withdrew from the election citing lack of transparency.
The other faction, led by incumbent Mongu District Chairperson Matakala Nyambe went through unopposed following the withdrawal of the other team.
And UPND Western Province Chairperson, Musangu Njamba who dismissed social media reports that the intraparty elections were cancelled, said the other group withdrew out of ‘cowardice’.
Mr Njamba said the group that withdrew were trying to have the intra-party election cancelled.
"Each and every organisation has rules and regulations. UPND has electoral rules and it's not in our rules that if a candidate withdraws the elections are cancelled, no," Mr Njamba said.
He said the withdrawal of the Mwilola faction led to Commissioner Benard Mpundu declaring the Matakala faction unopposed.
Mr Njamba said it was unfortunate that despite the two factions being advised to reconcile and form a district executive the Mwilola continued causing confusions.
Mr Mpundu declared the committee led by the incumbent District Chairperson Matakala Nyambe unopposed because the Mwilola faction decided to withdraw from the race.
Mr Njamba was reacting to reports that UPND Mongu District intra-party election were yesterday afternoon cancelled abruptly due to confusion surrounding the two factions that emerged.
