UPND aspirant wants more women in politics

- By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) Wusakile aspiring Member of Parliament Gloria Shonga has advised women to stand up and take up decision-making positions.

Ms Shonga said women should not be intimidated but rather stand up and compete for key leadership positions usually dominated by men.

She observed that women were shying away from taking part in influential activities especially political positions due to the intimidation from men.

"I have observed that we have women who would want to aspire for certain positions but end up pulling out and remain in the background due to the way we are treated," he said.

Ms Shonga noted that the political arena was getting so unfriendly to women a situation she said automatically discouraged them from taking part in certain races.

She stated that time had come for women to come out of their hiding places and show the world that they could take up leadership roles with confidence.

She said women were the backbone of families, hence the need for them to stand up strong and make the world a better place.

Meanwhile, Ms Shonga stated the need to have recreation facilities for the youths of Wusakile constituency so that illicit activities such as alcohol abuse and crime could be reduced.

"We have so many youths who do not have anything to do in the constituency that is why we see the use of drugs, and illicit behaviours on the rise among our children.

"They do not have anything to keep them busy during their free time," she said.
