Mulungushi Textiles reopening in sight

- By KETRA KALUNGA

THE reopening of the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe is in sight as the movement of finances from China, which was delayed by the Covid-19 outbreak, has started

Central Province Permanent Secretary, Bernard Chomba, said the movement of finances from China to Zambia had started moving following the reduction in the number of cases in that country.

Mr Chomba said that the provincial administration and the Ministry of Defence were in the process of stocking up raw materials in readiness for re-opening.

He said to this effect, farmers would this week be engaged through the provincial agriculture coordinators to grow cotton and those willing would be given about 100 tonnes free seed with chemicals.

Mr Chomba said the farmers would also be offered extension services needed to produce enough and quality cotton so that the textile could have enough raw materials needed to run the factory.

“So to all our farmers in the province and outside, we are knocking on your door that this year the provincial administration with Mulungushi Textiles will be giving free materials so that we can produce more cotton to supply the firm,” he said.

Mr Chomba said that the machinery would be brought into the country by the equity partner while the old ones would be worked on before the harvesting and processing of cotton in April next year.

“We want a situation where once we open the textiles we don't want it to close again. So the essence of this exercise that we are to embark on is that we want to prepare Mulungushi Textiles with the raw material that it needs,” Mr Chomba said.
