Women for Change urges women to register as voters
WOMEN for Change has asked women across the country to take advantage of the four day extension to acquire voters cards and take part in the coming general elections.
Executive Director Lumba Siyanga said in an exclusive interview yesterday that though the period extended was not enough, it was the only chance women who failed to acquire the voters cards to register, had .
Ms Siyanga said women especially in rural areas should register as voters because this was the only way they can ensure that their rights were attained.
She said women also have a chance of standing as candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
She said getting voters cards was not only about them voting but also making them qualify to contest as councilors and
Members of Parliament and make change in the communities where they live.
"The first thing women should do before considering to become a candidate is to become voters themselves. It is only then that these women can qualify to do whatever they want to do.
Similarly, the women can contribute towards meaningful change which they long to have in terms of making the demands on issues they don't agree with.
"By voting women will have the power to make politicians accountable to the promises that are made," she said.
As voters, Ms Siyanga said, the women will be able to compel the politicians to fulfill their promises.
She said voting was an important exercise which should be undertaken by all well-meaning citizens.
