Mukobeko Maximum female inmates get 1, 000 chicks empowerment
FEMALE inmates at Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility have been empowered with 1, 000 chicks and inputs by the government to boost their poultry business and sustain themselves while in incarceration.
Minister of Gender, Elizabeth Phiri said when she handed over the donation that the government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu was walking its talk of not leaving anyone behind including the inmates.
Ms. Phiri said the donation of poultry inputs by the ministry of Gender would help break the poverty of female inmates when they are re-integrated with their families.
The Kanyama lawmaker said the donations would also help the inmates obtain life skills and work experience while in incarceration.
Ms. Phiri called on other stakeholders to support inmates with various fundraising ventures to help the inmates re- integrate successfully into society.
"Preparing inmates for re-integration with their families is key in the rehabilitation process and it helps reduce re-offending and create confidence in ex-inmates of being accepted back into society," she said.
And Central province minister, Sydney Mushanga commended the government for empowering the female inmates.
And Mr. Mushanga assured the inmates of government's continued support to easy the everyday challenges that comes with being incarcerated.
"Never should you think that because you are in prison, the government won't care for you and that your human rights cease to exist, that is not true, as government will continue caring for you," he said.
Speaking earlier, Central province deputy commissioner, Daxies Makeyi commended the government for the gesture which he said would address the asocial, economical and health needs of the inmates.
He said the donation would further maximize the potential of the female inmates in entrepreneurship skills.
In a vote thanks, inmate, Shabu Benos said the donation was a clear demonstration of the government's love , dedication and determination in promoting restorative justice.
