Zesco back on top

-

The stalemate in Choma pushed Zesco United to 19 points, one point ahead of Buildcon who dropped to second with 18 points.

The clash of the titans saw Zesco United settle first at Independence Stadium with Clement Mwapes being the first one to test Allan Chibwe in the Green Eagles goal post with an effort which went wide five minutes after kick off.

Zesco came close to scoring in the eighth minute through Maybin Kalengo whose header was saved by Chibwe.

The visitors continued to dominate the first half of the game and almost broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through left back Fackson Kapumbu whose excellent free kick was tipped over the bar by Chibwe.

Green Eagles came close 10 minutes before the break when Michael Mwenya unleashed a powerful shot from outside Zesco’s penalty box which was saved Otieno.

Former Red Arrows winger Bruce Musakanya almost gave Zesco the lead two minutes before the break but he was unfortunate as his strike went over the bar.

Green Eagles were given a chance to break the deadlock four minutes into the second half after they were awarded a free-kick outside Zesco’s penalty box which Mulungwe missed by a whisker.

Zesco replied with a fantastic free- kick from Kapumbu which was saved by Chibwe before Silwimba fired one over the bar in the 70th minute.

After 70 minutes of no goals, Numba Mumamba introduced David Molinga for Enock Sakala while Logic Chingandu replaced Mwape Mwelwa.

Samuel Sikaonga replaced Donashano Malama while, Kasoma Luwawa replaces Musakanya. However the changes made no difference as the two sides shared the spoils after the final whistle.

The stalemate propelled Eagles to eighth on the Super Division table with 12 points on par with Indeni and Nkwazi who moved one spot down the log.

Meanwhile Super League action continues today with Green Buffaloes seeking to bounce back from three consecutive defeats when they host unbeaten Forest Rangers who are coming from beating Buildcon in a Ndola derby played on Wednesday.

Red Arrows are at home as they host Young Green Eagles at Nkoloma Stadium while at Indeni Sports complex, Wedson Nyirenda’s Lusaka Dynamos will face Indeni.
