New Kazungula Border taxi rank coming
THE Livingstone City Council is seeking for partnership with investors to put up a new Kazungula Border taxi rank at the Intercity Bus Terminus.
Taxi drivers led by Victor Mwela of Mwevic Tours had requested the local authority to establish a new Kazungula Border taxi rank, charging that the current one was ‘politically inclined.’
In a letter dated December 15, 2020 addressed, acting Town Clerk Liftrey Ndaba said that the establishment of taxi rank goes with certain requirements which the local authority was seeking to address before such a decision is executed.
Mr Ndaba saidd that the local authority was planning to establish a taxi rank for both Kazungula and Victoria Falls border routes.
He said, therefore, that Mr
Mwela’s request was under consideration once partners come on board.
“The local authority has a legal framework to provide services and guide development within the area of its jurisdiction; opening of a taxi rank for instance requires that the taxi operators and the traveling public are provided with basic facilities like a shelter, toilets and clean water,” he said.
Mr Ndaba said that the council had reserved land near the new modern bus station and was currently seeking development partners to fund the project.
He said that once that was done, the taxi rank would cater for taxi operations for Kazungula and Victoria Falls areas.
“Further, the issue raised of political interference at any Council Taxi Rank is not acceptable and hence, investigations have been instituted against the Kazungula Taxi Rank in town and all those found wanting will be dealt with according to the provisions of the law,” he said.
