AVAP cautions scribes

JOURNALIST­S must be patriotic and ensure that they do not cause division in the country through careless and irresponsi­ble reporting to impress a certain section of society ahead of the August 12 elections, Anti Voter Vpathy Copperbelt Coordinato­r Poster Jumbe has cautioned.

Mr Jumbe said journalist­s must ensure that they were accurate and objective in the manner they report about various national issues to avoid setting the country on fire especially that some politician­s seem to be emotionall­y charged ahead of August elections.

He said journalist­s many countries had their countries on through biased nd sponsible reporting.

Mr Jumbe was speaking in Kitwe at the weekend.

"So it is important that journalist­s in Zambia maintain peace and harmony before, during and after elections through mature and responsibl­e reporting. journalist­s should understand that if they decide to put the country on fire through careless and irresponsi­ble reporting, their families will not be spared by the violence which may erupt as a result of their carelessne­ss.

Mr Jumbe also urged opposition­s politician­s against using the effects of Covid-19 on the economy to mislead people, but remain truthful on how the pandemic had ravaged economies in the world.

He said it was important to pray to God and strictly follow the Ministry of Health guidelines to prevent the spread of covid-19.

"Covid 19 is real and we should change our attitude. Let us ensure that we follow the Ministry of Health guidelines to curb the spread of this deadly pandemic. Let us not play games about it, but ensure that we follow the guidelines.

"It is very clear that people are dying of covid-19. So let us adhere. People must not play games with this disease," he stressed.

So it is important that journalist­s in Zambia maintain peace and harmony before, during and after elections through mature and responsibl­e reporting.
