ISPONSORED the UPND parliamentary candidates in 2016 when we were in an alliance, New Hope MMD president, Nevers Mumba has claimed.
And barely two days after announcing that his party was ready to go into an alliance with the Patriotic Front (PF), Dr Mumba has u-turned, declaring that he would go solo in the August 12 general elections.
He said this is because alliances could not work in Zambia as most of the political leaders were self-centred.
However, Operation Save MMD treasurer, Geoffrey Mulenga, described Dr Mumba as an untrustworthy politician.
Speaking when he was featured on Hot FM Radio's hot seat programme on Thursday, Dr Mumba said he gave K50, 000 to each UPND candidate to help them with campaigns in 2016.
Dr Mumba said the PF would continue engaging in virtual meeting with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in futility because its leaders were hopeless.
"The PF will continue engaging in virtual meetings with the IMF because the PF don't have a plan, but I have a plan and I am the only one who can give them hope," Dr Mumba said.
He said Zambians were ready to have a Christian leader in him who would turn around the country's economic misfortunes.
But in an interview yesterday, Mr Mulenga said Dr Mumba’s name would remain associated with betraying the people.
Mr Mulenga described Dr Mumba as an inconsistent politician who could not be trusted, warning that, “any political party planning to work or form an alliance with him must do so at their own peril.”
He said the New Hope MMD president’s political journey had been full of inconsistencies and betrayals.
He said it was sad that yesterday when he was featured on a radio programme, Dr Mumba was decampaigning President Edgar Lungu whose party he desperately wanted to have an alliance with.
Mr Mulenga said Dr Mumba has not only betrayed fellow politicians but also misled unsuspecting people with his demeanour that masks a highly deceitful character.
“Let me warm those involved in this petty scheme trying to entertain Dr Mumba to decampaign President Lungu that not so long ago, he (Dr Mumba) was a darling with the UPND and Mr Hichilema gave him a free lawyer Mulambo Haimbe for three years in courts, but today the pastor is insulting his former alliance partner,” Mr Mulenga said.
