Husband on the run after murdering wife

A 47-YEAR-OLD woman of K village in Kanakantap­a ward of Chongwe has allegedly been murdered by her husband after a marital dispute.

Chongwe district commission­er, Mr. Robster Mwanza who confirmed the developmen­t described the incident as devastatin­g. He condemned the suspected murder and appealed to the residents to practice restraint when faced with the temptation to engage in fighting.

He disclosed that the couple reportedly had a sharp difference on women’s day on 8th March and the wife was even hospitaliz­ed after being assaulted. He said that the suspected murder happened in the early hours of yesterday (12/03/2021). He named the suspect who was currently on the run as Walubita mwanang’uku, 51. He however assured the family that he was hopeful that police would do their job and bring the culprit to book.

He revealed that police visited the scene after receiving a report and picked the body. According to him, the suspect allegedly ran away with the wife’s cell phone and an undisclose­d amount of money.

The DC also thanked the father of the suspect for calling for the arrest of his own son. He said that this showed that the father was a cooperativ­e citizen.

And Kanakantap­a councillor, Hildah Musopa condemned the act. She named the deceased as Bertha Zimba, 47. She also bemoaned the slow response by police. She therefore appealed to police to ensure that they respond to reports by residents promptly. She said that the deceased earlier reported the husband for assault. She was however surprised that police only showed up after the murder.

Meanwhile, the suspect's father, Mr. mwanang’uku condemned the barbaric act by his son. He also confirmed that the couple had sharp difference­s since women’s day on 8th March. He acknowledg­ed that the deceased reported the matter to police and was issued with a call out for the suspect, but no action was taken. Efforts to get a comment from the police proved futile by press time. Meanwhile the body of the deceased was deposited at Chongwe hospital awaiting further action.

SINOMA Mpande Limestone Limited in the Nachitete area of Chongwe has resorted to importing gypsum due to the shortage of the commodity on the Zambian market.

Company assistant public relations manager, administra­tion, Carlos Wang confirmed the developmen­t during an interview with the Daily Nation and acknowledg­ed that the company has had challenges in meeting the demand for cement at its plant.

He was happy to announce that operations have since up scaled after the company found a source for gypsum.

He said that the lack of gypsum on the Zambian market has had a negative effect on the company’s production and said the firm was now importing the commodity from Namibia.

He was therefore hopeful that the delays in approving orders for buyers at the plant would be completely eradicated now that the company had found a source of the commodity.

He also disclosed that the Cement transporte­rs who were reported to be waiting for weeks at the company’s yard had since been serviced.

He however noted that only trucks that were coming for fresh orders were parked at the plant and were being serviced at the normal pace.

And director of Mines in the ministry of Mines and Mineral Developmen­t, Fred Banda earlier indicated that the country was experienci­ng shortage of gypsum, a material necessary for the production ment.

He pointed out that the import of gypsum was the only immediate option though this was a costly undertakin­g.

He disclosed that the country had other areas where the mineral occurs and that the ministry was therefore considerin­g local sources of the commodity.
