LETS BURN IT: WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

-

LITERALLYall our lives begun as a very competitive race which only ended when one out of the millions of sperms won by reaching the egg first , fused with it and then formed the permanent union that later became me and you. The pace of the race itself depended on how much energy there was in the mitochondria, the power house of these competing cells. And the energy itself was sourced from food eaten by our fathers(Happy fathers day). So literally our being here depended on how much food was there in the first place.

The association of food with man can never be over emphasized for food has been part of us since the beginning of time. As a matter of fact some religious books say that even our problems begun as a result of food. I am told that when Adam who is believed to be the first human “ate” the forbidden fruit given to him by his wife Eve, the first woman, then a pandora’s box of evil was opened and untold suffering including death was unleashed on mankind. To date, death is still the most painful mystery to us and Covid-19 is just adding to its endless list of victims , with now far over a million lives lost to the pandemic Globally.

Even in the fight against Covid-19, food has been found to be a very important factor. I Cant agree more with one who said “we are what we eat”. Yes indeed food affects our weight which eventually affects our health and general wellbeing. Last week we talked about how being overweight and obese affect our chances against Covid-19 and other diseases like diabetes ,heart problems etc. Today I would like us to look at how food makes one overweight and obese.

This information, I believe is not new to most of us but I think it should be re emphasized especially at a time such as this . A time when one’s weight literally makes a difference on whether one will end up on Oxygen or not, whether one will end up in ICU or not and if they do if they will come back home smiling or come out the other side lifeless in a cold metallic box.

Food is defined as any substance consumed to provide  nutritional  support for an  organism. Food is usuproteins, animal or fungal origin, of  vitamins, plant, or  minerals. ally

and contains essential  nutrients, such as  carbohydrates, fats,

ed by the organism's cells to provide  energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth. But for us to be health we must eat the right food that is meant for us. We cant eat what is meant for animals neither they can survive on our diets though at some point we do share certain foods. Sadly there are some reports of humans eating fellow ism.

The right nutrition for people should contain carbohydrates like nshima, kandolo, mwanja, etc ,these are broken down into sugar and give us energy. The diet should also consist of proteins like meat ,fish ,kapenta ,beans etc which the body uses for growth and repair of damaged tissues. Of course there must also be some fat like oils for warmth and storage of energy for use in times of starvation. Then the vitamins which come in form of vegetables and some fruits help with a lot of the processes that take place in the body without which the body can’t function properly. humans ,cannibal

And finally do minerals and pother trace elements from different other foods.

HOW FAT IS FORMED?

In simple terms fat is formed when there is a disbalance between how much food one ingests and how much of it is being utilized. In short if one eats food more than the body needs then the excess food will be turned into fat by the liver and then be stored in the body. For men this fat is usually stored around the belly while for ladies it is usually around the breasts, thighs and the buttocks. But both do store it around many internal organs in the body including the liver that makes it. There are some foods called “fast foods” that give very quick energy and are a major culprit to weight gain. Please remember it is not only carbohydrates that can cause one to become fat when taken in excess but also proteins and fats. The principle is moderation no matter what one is taking, take it in the right amount. On top of all this we should also put into consideration the time we are eating; usually late hours are not the best as most of the food eaten at those awkward hours will be just converted into fat whilst one is sleeping.

The big tummy affects breathing.

Extra fat on your neck or chest or across your abdomen can make it difficult

to breathe deeply and may produce hormones that affect your body's breathing patterns. You may also have a problem with the way your brain controls your breathing. Most people who have obesity hypoventilation syndrome also have sleep apnea. I have seen a lot of patients that worsening oxygen demands and one thing among most of them especially men and men are the ones affected the most is that they had “big” tummies.

The diagram the main muscle of breathing is not allowed enough room to expand when one has a lot of abdominal fat and this leads to breathing difficulties which becomes double trouble once such a one gets Covid 19. There have been a couple of ladies as well but one other challenge is for pregnant women, the womb also affects breathing. At some point we have had to do emergency c sections on pregnant women to try and save them.

So beloved when you look at that plate in front of you, when the aroma of the beautiful food in it hits your nostrils and when your salivating mouth eventually gets the bite of it, please always remember that it is not just food. It can if not taken in moderation be the beginning of your end. Please let us all take full responsibility

of what we eat, when we eat and how much we eat. Remember the excess food will be turned into fat and if we don’t burn it ,we will hang it and on it SARSCOV2 the virus that causes Covid 19 will thrive and then there is no telling how things can go afterwards. This is one lesson I wouldn’t want to learn and only if you knew as I hope you do now, I am very sure it is one you wouldn’t want to learn as well.
