STICK TO ELECTORAL RULES, POLITICIANS URGED

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

PROJECTSupport Learners Zambia (PSLZ) in Livingstone has urged political players and other stakeholders to ensure that they adhere to the electoral code of conduct.

PSLZ district coordinator, Nyambe Mutete, said that during this year’s general elections, a new approach would be required especially with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Mutete said that while electoral players would conduct their activities, adherence to the health protocol must be a priority.

He said that because of that, changes in campaign strategies and the holding of meetings must be prioritized as a country anticipates a third wave of covid-19 since the cold season has started.

“We are now in the critical period of the of the electoral process where intra party democracy shall be tested as many who will not be adopted from their political parties due to frustrations, will have to find space to contest as in

dependent candidates

Mr Mutete noted that in the past held elections, voter education had been a challenge due to limited funding, hence the need for political players to up their game in educating their electorate.

He said this was one of their requirement under the electoral code of conduct that regulates all stakeholders in an election as civil societies only supplement what the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) does.

“We want to appeal to the commission to ensure that voter education is intensified for the electorate to quickly know on the current changes to the electoral process,” Mr Mutete said.
