- By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has expressed concern at the rate newly constructed infrastructure is being vandalised across the country.

President Lungu said it was worrying that some citizens had continued vandalising infrastructure meant to ease their lives.

The President was speaking when he officially opened the Long Acres Fly Over Bridge in Lusaka yesterday.

The flyover bridge is one of the four bridges that form a key component of the $269 million Lusaka Decongestion Road Project being undertaken by Afcons Group.

The other bridges are the Archades, Makeni and Munali Fly Over Bridges which are already operationalized.

" I have noticed that speeding is one of the factors that damage our newly constructed infrastructure as well as road signs.

" Let us all ensure that we guard our infrastructure

jealously so that the huge resources we spend do not go to waste," he said.

Mr Lungu said the bridge would help reduce traffic around long acres area.

He added that reduced traffic implied that motorists would move around the bridge in a very short time than before including those that were commuting using buses to and from their work places on a daily basis.

President Lungu also thanked India for partnering with Zambia in the improvement of infrastructure which he said would make transportation easy for the people of Zambia.

And speaking earlier, Minister of Local Government Charles Banda said congestion in the area would be a thing of the past.

And Indian High Commissioner to Zambia Ngulkham Jathom Gangte said that such partnerships were a testimony of the cordial relationship between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo advised the head of the state to continue inspecting projects across the ten provinces and leave politics to the ministers.

Mr Lusambo said the president had no reason to worry or panic about the upcoming general elections because he had no competitor.

And Lusaka Central member of Parliament Margaret Mwanakatwe said the addition of the fly over bridge will not only reduce traffic congestion but added to the beauty of the area.
