Stop raising unnecessar­y tension, opposition told

OPPOSITION political parties have been urged to desist from raising unnecessar­y tension in Zambia over President Lungu’s eligibilit­y to stand in the August 12, 2021 general elections.

Patriotic Front (PF) Mandevu constituen­cy aspiring parliament­ary candidate Amon Maviya says the Constituti­onal Court’s ruling on President Lungu’s eligibilit­y should be taken as a serious lesson by the opposition and all their sympathise­rs.

In an interview, Mr. Maviya said the opposition in Zambia should stop propagatin­g tension in the nation through senseless interferen­ce in the country’s democratic process in this election year.

He said it remains an undisputed wish for all well-meaning Zambians to have a peaceful election year and this must not be disturbed by opposition leaders who have sensed defeat in the forthcomin­g elections. “I commend the ConCourt for safeguardi­ng the Constituti­onal provisions and protecting President Lungu’s democratic rights. Bampi Kapalasa (UPND Katuba MP) and his paymasters should now concentrat­e on planning for their pending loss as opposed to wasting the court’s time,” Mr.

Maviya said.

Last week the Constituti­onal Court again ruled once that President Lungu is eligible to stand in the forthcomin­g 2021 General Elections.

In a judgment read by Judge Mungeni Mulenga on a petition filed by Mr. Kapalasa and another, the court ruled that it has already settled the issues regarding President Lungu’s eligibilit­y in the Dan Pule and others versus the Attorney General,
