Timely agro input supply vital, says Mpongwe chief

- By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

AGRICULTURE remains heavily dependent on timely delivery of inputs to prepare farmers, says Chieftainess Lesa of the Lamba people of Mpongwe district.

The Chieftainess expressed happiness that her chiefdom for the first time received farming input on time which would motivate farmers.

Chieftainess Lesa said agriculture was heavily dependent on timely delivery of inputs and the move to supply early would result in the area recording a better crop yield.

She said when Nyimba Investments Head-Sales and Marketing Manager Willings Mulendema, paid a courtesy call on her yesterday.

“What you have done as Nyimba is really great and we really appreciate it. This is the first time in many years that we have received fertiliser in May

and this will surely result in the area recording a bumper harvest. As you know agriculture is dependent on the timely delivery of inputs and this is what you have done,” she said

Chieftainess Lesa said even the other contractors engaged to supply Urea should emulate Nyimba so that inputs were supplied on time.

“In future we would recommend that you Nyimba should be engaged to supply all the quantities so that they arrive in the district early,” she said.

Owing to the timely delivery of inputs, she said farmers had been able to increase their hectares in terms of crop output.

District Commissioner, Keith Maila, said in many years, Mpongwe had for the first time received inputs for the 2020/21 farming season early.

Mr Maila said with the early delivery, he was confident the area would be able to record a bumper harvest.

“What really makes me happy is the quality of your fertiliser is of high quality and I want to thank you Nyimba for what you are doing to deliver inputs early. You are truly a good partner of the government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Mulendema said Nyimba would complete the delivery of inputs by the end of May.
