1.9m Zambians get relief food
ABOUT 1.9 million people are receiving relief food from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) since last year, DMMU national coordinator Chanda Kabwe has said.
In an interview, Mr Kabwe said the relief food support to vulnerable people since last year was an indication that the Patriotic Front(PF) is a hardworking Government.
“There are so far about 1.9 million people benefiting from the unit's relief food support since last year, and this is an indication that the Patriotic Front regime is a hardworking government,” Mr Kabwe said.
He said as a responsible gGovernment, the PF administration would not allow Zambians to starve.
Mr Kabwe explained that the food relief package was meant to cushion the negative impact of climate change, drought, floods and other emergencies such as the Covid-19 pandemic on vulnerable citizens. He further said the number of beneficiaries may be increased once Government was done with analysing the data that was collected from 116 districts to assess the availability levels and the impact of Covid-19 on people’s livelihood.
Meanwhile, Mr Kabwe said Government’s move to aid families that had been stricken by hunger should not be perceived as a political maneuver ahead of the August 12 general election.
He assured Zambians that Government would continue rendering help even after the 2021 general election.
Mr Kabwe explained that the DMMU’s duty was to help citizens across the country who were in need of assistance.
