UPND MUST COMPENSATE LOOTING VICTIMS - SHAKAS

... victims now living in abject poverty

- By NAMO PHIRI

UPNDshould take it upon themselves to compensate the Mandevu Violence victims, PF Mandevu constituency candidate Christopher Shakafuswa has said.

Mr Shakafuswa said the United Party for National Development (UPND) should compensate the victims of the Mandevu Violence that was caused by UPND cadres who looted shops and destroyed items.

Mr Shakafuswa said these people have families that need to be fed and catered for through those businesses which were destroyed, therefore it is important that the UPND compensate them.

He said it would be heartless for the UPND not to take action over what their members did and is therefore requesting that action be taken as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the UPND has blamed the PF for the Mandevu fracas.

UPND presidential spokesperson Anthony Bwalya said it is sad for the innocent families and citizens whose businesses and livelihoods were destroyed on the day, arising from acts of lawlessness that included destruction of peoples businesses.

Mr. Bwalya said the party is especially concerned that up to now despite the identities of perpetrators of the violence that took place being known, no one has been held accountable.

“No one has been held accountable for such rampant lawlessness by PF cadres” said Mr. Bwalya

Mr. Bwalya said the UPND is looking to rebuild trust and confidence in the police, so that they too will be able to carry out their mandate without the fear of politically motivated reprisals.
