- By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

KITWE risks facing a major catastrophe in terms of numbers of mortality if COVID-19 self-medication and treatment at home continues, says Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH) Senior Medical Abidan Chansa.

Dr Chansa observed that most of the patients that tested positive refused to go to the hospital and preferred placing themselves on self-treatment which he said was not supposed to be the case.

He said that these patients stay home until their conditions deteriorate.

He added that others presented the patients to the health facility late after noticing that the condition begun to deteriorate.

We have been receiving information that some people have even gone as far as administering oxygen to their relatives who have tested positive at home.

“We are also aware that there are some unethical health personnel treating patients from their homes beyond administering oxygen,” he said.

Dr Chansa further advised the people to seek professional medical attention at the hospital whenever they felt they had the symptoms for the virus.

He said visiting health facilities on time would reduce the mortalities being recorded.

He said the earlier people realized that Covid-19 was not a simple disease, the better it would be for the whole nation.
