Amnesty ‘reckless’ report torn-apart

- By PETER SICHALI and NOEL IYOMBWA

CLAIMS by Amnesty International of alleged violation of human rights in Zambia should be treated as political assassination on the reputation of the country, International Human Rights Commission, Zambia Chapter president Kafula Mubanga has said.

And Reformed Church in Zambia Reverend Charles Ngoma said the latest Amnesty International report does not reflect the real situation in the country.

Dr Mubanga said the sentiments advanced by the Amnesty International do not have a correct base and were mere political attacks on the state sponsored by the opposition.

"These are mere political attacks being sponsored by the opposition to dent Government's human rights reputation," he said.

Dr Mubanga said prisoners in Zambia have enjoyed their rights especially during President Edgar Lungu's tenure.

He said the government had been in the forefront advocating the advancement of human rights in the country.

"The report by Amnesty International should be treated as an attempt to dent Zambia's good human rights reputation," Dr Mubanga said.

Meanwhile, Rev Ngoma said that the report has potential to create confusion in the country and the good effort the multi-sectoral team has made. He said that the report is painting a bad picture about the country and the politicians and advised Zambians and the international community not to take the report seriously.

“We call upon all the citizens of our country to say no to information that can separate us.
