Wina hails KK’s parents, Muchinga Province
GOVERNMENT has paid tribute to first republican President Kenneth Kaunda’s parents and the people of Muchinga Province for providing the environment and guidance that contributed towards moulding Dr. Kaunda into an exemplary leader.
Vice President Inonge Wina said Dr Kaunda grew up to become a man who defied all odds, in the pursuit of the good for all mankind, and the liberties that the people of Zambia, the Southern African region and African continent as a whole, enjoy today.
Ms Wina said the values, principles and qualities that shaped Dr. Kaunda to become the great leader that he was, had their roots in Chinsali.
She said this during the funeral service of Dr Kaunda at Lubwa Mission School ground in Chinsali yesterday.
“Muchinga Province occupies a special place in the history of our country.
It is here that his Excellency Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda was born and grew up, later to become the first president of the republic of Zambia. The values, principles and qualities that shaped Dr. Kaunda to become the great leader that he was, had their roots here, in Chinsali.
“We, therefore, pay tribute to Dr. Kaunda’s parents and the people of this area and the province at large, for providing the environment and guidance that contributed towards moulding Dr. Kaunda to emerge into the exemplary leader that we mourn today,” said Ms Wina.
And Ms Wina said the province, like the rest of the country, had a good share of developmental projects under the leadership Dr Kaunda.
She said the TARAZA which was built in 1975, at a cost of US$500 million was one of the major hallmarks of Dr. Kaunda’s legacy that contributed towards the development of the transport industry as a key enabler of social and economic development.
Ms Wina said Tazara brought great relief to the country in the transportation of its imports and exports through the port of Dar es Salaam, in neighbouring Tanzania.
She said Dr Kaunda, in his quest for accelerated national development, also constructed the Tanzania Zambia Mafuta Pipelines Limited ( TAZAMA) in 1968.
She said the pipeline which, runs from Dar es Saalam to Ndola, through Muchinga Province, was then, and remains a strategic facility for the transportation of crude oil to drive Zambia’s economy.
Ms Wina said Dr. Kaunda also placed a high premium on agriculture as the mainstay of the country’s economy.
