UPND CADRES ATTACK MOTORISTS
...Damage several vehicles along Kasangula Road
A CONVOY of UPND cadres yesterday attacked motorists and damaged several vehicles along Lusaka’s Kasangula Road near Petroda Filling Station.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed that a docket for malicious damage to property was opened.
Ms Katongo said one of the victims, identified as Mr Daniel Samaliya aged 47 reported the matter which happened around 15:30 hours to police.
SUSPECTEDUPND cadres in Chongwe have continued to cause political havoc in what they term as the UPND stronghold in Manyika area of Chongwe.
Chongwe district PF chairman, Charles Mumena described the development as undemocratic.
He claimed that the UPND cadres had continued to harass and assault anyone who was perceived to belong to another political party.
He alleged that the UPND had severally harassed PF members in the areas where they thought they were stronger .
He alleged that suspected UPND cadres on Saturday assaulted three PF members and destroyed PF campaign materials and that the incidence happened in Chiyalusha village in Chongwe around 19:00 hours.
He claimed this happened during a road show by the UPND who descended on the three PF members with pangas .
He described the incident as unfortunate and urged the UPND to desist from committing political violence in areas they thought they were stronger.
“How can they hedge an area and claim that it was a no go area? Our members in these areas are not safe because of the high level of intolerance by the UPND.
“This needs to be brought to an end because it has potential to discredit the election results,” he said.
Lusaka Province police commissioner, Lackson Sakala confirmed that police received a report of political violence involving suspected UPND cadres.
He stated that police received the report on Sunday around 14:00 hours and that a
Geodfrey Chamanyunga, 47 a PF secretary in Manyika ward reported the matter to Chongwe police.
He said that it was alleged that three PF members were assaulted by suspected UPND cadres during a road show that was conducted by the UPND.
He said that it was alleged that the UPND cadres who were armed with pangas assaulted the three and maliciously damaged PF campaign materials and identified the three as Charles Tembo, 47, Maybin Mwanamonga, 30 and Jane Bunga, 42.
Meanwhile, when contacted for a comment, Chongwe district UPND youth chairman, Robert Mubanga denied any knowledge of the incident.
