North-West Chamber nods Musokotwane pick

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

THE North-Western Chamber of Commerce is confident that new Finance Minister, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane is capable of leading an economic turnaround strategy

Chamber president, Mukumbi Kafuta, said Dr Musokotwane was a seasoned economist and comes in with a vast experience in developing financial markets for the economy.

“Without any doubt, President Hakainde Hichilema’s appointment of Dr Musokotwane, a former Secretary to the Treasury and chief economic advisor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as Finance Minister during the MMD administration, is a well-thought and progressive one,” Mr Kafuta said.

He said at the time Dr Musokotwane served as Finance minister, the country’s economy experienced growth to an excess of about 7.6 percent despite the global economy crunch.

Mr Kafuta said the minister would apply his vast experience in growing the stressed economy to higher heights.

“So, our expectations are that we want to see economic growth, the Kwacha should gain its strength against convertible currencies, “he said.

Mr Kafuta said the chamber was confident that the new Minister would be instrumental in promoting Zambia as a preferred investment destination.

The chamber, he said, was expecting the 2022 national budget to be inspirational and that adequate funds should be allocated to sectors that would immediately trigger economic growth.

He appealed to all Zambians to accord President Hichilema reasonable time within which to come up with a team they would be proud of.
