MMD WRANGLES DEEPEN ...as senior official calls for Nevers Mumba’s resignation
CONFUSION in the MMD has deepened with demands for Dr Nevers Mumba to step down as president mount.
Dr Mumba has been accused of killing the party because of lack of political skills and poor management.
Last week, New Hope MMD president Nevers mumba said the former ruling party had lost political clout and that in its current form, it had no chance of effectively participating in the country’s politics.
Dr Mumba said he had paid with his blood to keep MMD alive as he had fought several sponsored internal wrangles for 10 years in opposition.
But MMD chairperson for elections, Gastone Sichilima took a swipe at Dr Mumba, blaming him for the party’s misfortunes and poor performance in elections.
Mr Sichilima said there was need for Dr Mumba to step down if the former ruling party was to regain its lost glory.
“If MMD is to regain its lost glory, Dr Nevers Mumba should step down now. It is clear, members of the MMD and Zambians have rejected him due to his poor management and lack of political leadership skills,” Mr Sichilima said.
Mr Sichilima charged that Dr Mumba’s insistence to be party president was the reason why many members of the MMD have resorted not to support the party because they do not like and trust his leadership.
He said it was evident that Dr Mumba was rejected looking at the losses he has been recording in previous elections he had contested.
He added, “I can assure you that when Nevers Mumba retires honourably, the MMD will bounce back to its former glory. Nevers is the one who has killed the party. The man has killed MMD in people’s hearts. And we can’t continue seeing the party embarrassed in such a fashion because of one man, he has to retire now.”
He also called for a party
convention to have new office bearers that would stir the party back on its feet and later back in government.
