KATOMBORA MP CAUTIONS KAZUNGULA BORDER OFFICIALS

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

KATOMBORA Member of Parliament Clement Andeleki has cautioned government officials at Kazungula border post to desist from engaging themselves in corrupt practices.

Mr Andeleki says he was aware of some government officials who are involved in corrupt practices.

He said because of such vices, some government offices were hardly accessible to the majority Zambians and only a few were doing so.

“I am aware of the rampant corruption in certain government offices just here at the border. I am going to deal with such officials. I want us to serve our people diligently,” he said.

“I also want to appeal and encourage the people of Katombora to take the Covid-19 vaccine. It is very important, let us get vaccinated. That will save many lives. Just when I came, I have just been attending funerals nearly everywhere due to Covid-19. As an ambassador of good health, let us take the vaccine seriously. And Mr Andeleki lamented the high levels of poverty among the people in the Kazungula.

He said that the district is among the poorest districts in the country.

“In all fairness the poverty levels among my people is very serious. The district looks as if there was war,” he said.

Mr Andeleki said the residents of Kazungula were not really benefiting from the revenue being collected from the Kazungula Bridge.

He said that people at the border were having challenges crossing into Botswana because the fees were too high for them. “My people here at the border survive on cross border activities but the amount being charged is too high especially on the Covid-19 certificate. I want to appeal to the minister of Health to kindly revise the charge for the certificate. My people cannot afford,” he said.

“We need to zero-rate the cost and change what that PF government left behind. Why should we have a bridge that people do not benefit from,” he wondered.
