UPND U-TURN ON FREE EDUCATION DISAPPOINTS PARENTS

- By KALOBWE BWALYA

PARENTS and guardians are disappointed that President Hakainde Hichilema has changed his earlier position on providing free education if voted into office.

President Hichilema while in opposition made a promise that he would provide free education, a promise Zambians had bought into and voted for him.

On Friday, when he opened the first session of the 13th National Assembly, President Hichilema however clarified that he did not say he will provide free education, but to provide quality education for all Zambia learners.

And that has not settled well on parents, guardians as well as some leaners from different school.

Random interviews revealed that President Hichilema should address the issue as soon as possible.

In an interview with some parents in Lusaka, Ms Matrida Zyambo said she is disappointed that the President has u-turned on his earlier promise on free education in Zambia.

She said it is therefore surprising that the

President has changed his promise and started talking about quality education which he never mentioned during campaigns.

Another parent Mr Thomas Chanda said learners and parents were ready to go to school without paying school fees which the President had promised during campaigns.

Mr Chanda said the UPND were voted in by the Zambian majority with the promise of delivering free education among many other promises.

And a Grade 10 pupil from Munali Boys Secondary School in Lusaka Peter Zulu appealed to President Hichilema to find another way of helping pupils that were vulnerable and failing to meet school requirements.
