Police cautioned over witch-hunt
THE New Congress Party (NCP has described the announcement by Inspector General of Police, Lemmy Kajoba, that all crimes that were reported during the previous Government will be pursued again, as a mere witch hunt.
NCP president, Peter Chanda wondered why the police could this year become so active to investigate cases that were reported years back in the previous Government.
Mr Chanda said they did not understand why the police had to wait this long to bring to book culprits of the alleged crimes committed when the Patriotic Front was in office.
“We are really suspicious and we have a good reason to assume that this could also be a ploy by the ruling party to incapacitate the opposition, and particularly the PF.
“But our advice to the police is that let them be professional and avoid being used for political witch-hunt,” Mr Chanda said.
Yesterday, Mr Kajoba said all the crimes that were reported to police during the previous Government but died a natural death would be reinvestigated to ensure justice prevailed.
Mr Kajoba said he would also ensure that all the cases that were cited in the petition and presented to police on Monday by a Mr Bene Hachoombwa were brought to a conclusive end.
“All crimes that were reported to police during the previous government and are perceived to have dragged or to be inactive are receiving adequate attention by the current Police Command,” Mr Kajoba assured.
Mr Kajoba said it was not in the police’s interest to hurriedly present matters before court only to record an acquittal, discharge or Nolle prosequi but a conviction.
