Germany launches access to justice programme

THE German Embassy has launched the Enabling access to justice programme aimed at improving the Zambian access to accountabl­e institutio­ns.

Speaking during the launch, Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe said that enhances access to justice is a key interventi­on and important for addressing discrimina­tion and abuse of human rights.

Mr Haimbe is hopeful that the new EnAct will not only continue to strengthen collaborat­ion with the Germany Developmen­t commission but also engagement with key stakeholde­rs and bring developmen­t closer to the Zambian people.

He said that civil societies remain an essential building block of developmen­t and national cohesion.

The minister explained that civil societies are a source of informatio­n for citizens as well as government.

Germany Embassy Head of Coorperati­on Christoph Ritz said that the organisati­on aims at improving the Zambian population access to accountabl­e institutio­ns to justice and to transparen­t government decision making process.

He said that the programme is a core part of the governance portfolio of the Germany Developmen­t cooperatio­n which also focuses on support to decentrali­zation and public financial management.

Mr Ritz explained that this was a four year programme with a financial contributi­on of K260 million .

He noted that EnAct will build on the achievemen­ts of the predecesso­r programme Civil Society Participat­ion and Programme for Legal Empowermen­t and Enhanced Justic Delivery which ran from 2015 to July 2021.

Mr Ritz noted that the key achievemen­ts of CSPP and PLEED included increased accesses to legal aid services and human rights awareness through establishm­ent of legal help desks.
