Prolonged use of sexual enhancers can cause dysfunction

- ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

Dear Editor, SOME men seem not to trust their natural strength when it comes to sexual intimacy. These men resort to taking the sexually boosting concoctions such as seven hours, Congo dust and mutoto, among others.

It has been established that some men want to go several rounds during sexual intercourse so as to satisfy their spouses. Besides the traditional sexual enhancers, there are also conventional sexual boosters sold in the chemists and pharmacies which some men buy and use.

However, the sexual enhancers should only be taken at the recommendation of the medical practitioners. This is the way it should be. In another breath, taking drugs without the doctor's prescription is a health risk.

The use of traditional sexual boosters by men can work effectively in a short time. The efficacy of these medicines will be compromised in the long run due to the fact that they can lead to dysfunction where erection is concerned.

Low sperm count can also be adversely affected of taking these sexual boosters. It might become very complicated to heal such a health condition.

Some women also consume the sexual boosters; they add the pounded stuff in porridge or tea to keep their bodies warm so that men can enjoy sex to the climax. This practice is common in villages and it has been passed from generation to generation. It is high time this abominable act was outlawed.

It is mind boggling that there are many people selling the sexual boosters on all if not most of the streets of Lusaka. Some of the medicines being sold on the streets are genuine while others are fake.

Whether these sexual enhancers are conventional or traditional ones, they must be taken with caution. In my opinion, I feel the logical thing to do is not to take them.

The point worth noting is that sexual drive in men regardless of age can be enhanced by eating fruits such as bananas, oranges, apples, watermelon and mangoes, among others.

Other foods are vegetables such as rape, okra, cabbage, impwa (garden egg), beans, chibwabwa (pumpkin leaves) and bondwe.

Men in the habit of consuming the sexual boosters must stop because prolonged use of the sexual boosters can lead to dysfunction in the long run. The sexual boosters should only be taken following advice from the medical practitioners. Ultimately, this will help in avoiding the side effects which might arise from the prolonged use of these sexual boosters.

Not too long ago, there was a man in Lusaka who developed prolonged erection after consuming the sexual enhancers. He had to be taken to the University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
