COUNCILLOR WANTS BUS DRIVERS SCREENED

- By VITUMBIKO NYIMBIRI

A CIVIC leader in Lusaka has suggested that a screening exercise of drivers be implemented as a means to stop attacks on passengers following reports of theft and rape perpetrated by criminals masquerading as bus operators.

Kamwala Ward 5 Councillor Mainda Simata said in an interview the Lusaka City Council is going to pass a motion aimed at mandating the screening of all bus drivers and conductors.

“Then from our part as Lusaka City Council, we are going to pass a motion that will mandate the screening of all bus drivers and conductors before they are allowed to work as passenger bus drivers,” he said.

“That has to be put through notice to the Town Clerk then a date can be set for a special meeting. For now we are just working on that motion because it is something that has to be done collectively,” he said.

The matter is still under investigation by the police. Measures have been put in place to start motorised patrols and foot patrols especially in the areas which are prone to that kind of crimes,” Mr Simata said.

Meanwhile, Mr Simata has applauded the Zambia Police Service for giving the matter attention.

He said fear had gripped Lusaka residents who rely on public transport following reports of theft and rape perpetrated by criminals masquerading as bus operators.

Mr Simata who petitioned the Police Command to expedite the investigations into the matter expressed happiness with how they are being conducted.

He said the police have come up with measures to curb the situation.

“The matter is still under investigation by the police. Measures have been put in place to start motorised patrols and foot patrols especially in the areas which are prone to that kind of crimes,” Mr Simata said.
