Zambia’s failure to qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup a bitter pill

- Dear Editor,

THE Zambia national soccer team – Chipolopolo - have once again failed to qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup. This follows Zambia’s 3-1 humiliating defeat suffered at the hands of Tunisia last Tuesday.

Prior to playing Tunisia, Zambia convincingly beat Mauritania 4-0 at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka. In the encounter against Mauritania, Fashion Sakala netted a brace and Patson Daka scored one goal.

Technically, Zambia has failed to qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup despite a 4-0 drubbing of Mauritania. This result was good but not good enough because the team was already out of the qualifier.

The final match in

Group B of the World Cup qualifier last Tuesday has seen Tunisia emerge victorious with 13 points, Equatorial Guinea with 10 points, Zambia with 7 points and Mauritania is at the basement with a paltry 2 points.

The Beston Chambeshicoached side’s failure to qualify for Qatar has added woes to Zambia’s dwindled standard of football.

Zambia also failed to qualify for Cameroon 2022 Africa Cup of

Nations (AfCON) football tournament.

Given this scenario, it is evident that Zambia’s standard of football has plummeted and something must be done about it to revive the football fortunes. Granted, Zambia was once a football powerhouse in Africa.

As a soccer fan, I would suggest that our senior national team should go back to the drawing board. This suggestion sounds quite allright. The question begging for an answer is: “how many times should Zambia go to the drawing board?”

In conclusion, the stakeholders namely the corporate world and the Football Association of Zambia should come on board in a bid to revive the falling football standards.

Tough luck to Zambia for their failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

E. P, Lusaka.
