- By JOHN KOMBE

CHALIMBANA University will soon commence a leadership and governance degree programme for parliamentarians, University Vice Chancellor ( VC), Geoffrey Tambulukani has said.

Dr. Tamulukani confirmed the development when he addressed parliamentarians during a familiarization program held at the university at the weekend.

Over 25 members of the Coalition of African Parliamentarians Against HIV and AIDS (CAPAH) of Zambian were in attendance.

He said that the university would formulate a curriculum that would respond to the needs of the parliamentarians. He said that it was for this reason that the university would engage the parliamentarians on the formulation and fine-tuning of the curriculum.

He therefore challenged the lawmakers to enroll in the program once it commences and that the need for university education for parliamentarians cannot be overemphasized.

He was therefore hopeful that the program would attract many parliamentarians.

He said that the university had already commenced a similar program for chiefs

and the first cohort had successfully completed the first year of the two year traditional leadership and governance diploma program.

The Vice Chancellor ( VC), said that the university was committed to initiating programs that were tailored to meeting the needs of various segments of society.

He pointed out that the university had also created entrepreneurship programs for youths.

He said that the program which was aimed at equipping youths with entrepreneurial skills has so far yielded positive results.

And National Assembly

first deputy speaker, Malungo Chisangano observed that the university had a rich history with a number of prominent people having gone through the institution.

She named the late educationist, John Mwanakatwe, and first republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda as some of the notables.

She thanked the University for taking a progressive decision to commence the leadership and governance degree program for parliamentarians.

She was also pleased that the traditional leadership and governance program was progressing well.

She was also hopeful that the University would be an institution of choice for the intended youth entrepreneurship skills training by the government.

Meanwhile, in moving a vote of thanks, Minister of Local Government and Urban Development, Gary Nkombo hailed the University for opening its doors to the parliamentarians.

He assured the university that parliamentarians would support such an initiative by enrolling in the degree program.
