NO JERABOS AT THE BLACK MOUNTAIN - KABUSWE

- By KETRA KALUNGA

THERE will be nonames like Jerabos once suspended activities at all the mining dumpsites are resumed, mining will be done in an orderly manner, says Mines and Mineral Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe.

Mr. Kabuswe said the UPND when in opposition, promised during campaigns that they would change the Jerabo narrative that has been associated with fighting in all the dumpsites commonly known as black mountains.

He said every group of youths that would be operating at the dumpsites would be required to produce a safety certificate when mining activities resume anytime this month.

Speaking when he featured on ZNBC Sunday Interview, Mr. Kabuswe said the new dawn government has put in place safety requirements to avoid accidents that characterised mining activities at the dumpsites.

“We promised during campaigns that we are coming to remove the narrative of Jerabos. We don't want to be calling people that operate from the black mountain such names, we said we are coming to organise smallscale mining,” he said.

Mr. Kabuswe said his ministry is finalising structures that have been put in place to ensure that youths carry out mining activities in an orderly and safe manner.

He also said the ministry is putting measures in place that would ensure that artisanal mining is done in an organized way because the sector is critical to the growth of the industry.

“We have a lot of artisans who are doing mining except we need it in an organized way, they are also critical to the ramping up of this production of three million tons copper in the next 10 years,” he said.
