CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF IMMUNITY FOR LUNGU MISPLACED

- Dear Editor, CHANODA NGWIRA, Executive Director, African Youth Movement Zambia. AFRICAN YOUTH MOVEMENT ZAMBIA

WEread with dis may and disap pointment the calls by a clique of political ly-organised cadres calling themselves activists, to have the immunity of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu removed.

This is so unprecedented and wrong timing by the rul ing United Party for National Development whose desire is seemingly to punish and re venge on certain individuals from the former ruling party.

What we expected the UPND to do for now is to fo cus on repairing the so-called wrecked economy at least ac cording to their vocabulary which in our view is more of poetry centred than action as per the Zambian people’s expectations.

What a cancerous and di visive way of playing poli tics by the newly contracted Government to run the affairs of this nation.

I mean, is the removal of President Lungu’s immunity more important than giving hope by putting in place a hope giving roadmap towards re vamping our economy?

We ask so because what we have so far experienced is the good activities of silencing, re venging and settling scores by President Hakainde Hichilema and his Government against the many promises they gave to the people most of which they are backtracking on.

It is so annoying to see a swarm of cadres clad in the disguise of political activists being paraded and given me dia coverage to preach hate, malice and baseless accusa tions against the former Head of state whose desire when peacefully conceding defeat was to see a Zambia that would continue on the pace of devel opment from where he left.

What a careless and heart breaking way of starting to govern the people of Zambia.

Much as we are not de fending any wrong doing that the former regime could have done whilst in office, President Lungu inclusive, we are also not of the idea that the fight of the so-called wrong doing be politically motivated espe cially that President Hichilema promised to govern on the rule of law.

We are perturbed to say the least, we are downtrodden and flabbergasted to see the thirst and hunger by the ruling par ty to devour and fall on the former ruling party leadership like a tone of village molded pan bricks. This is uncalled for, too insensitive, very archa ic and colonial way of doing politics. We hoped for a better Zambia than this colossal hun ger of revenge and vengeance.

This we can simply call it as a bad egg of perpetual dictato rial and thuggery kind of lead ing this nation. What a circus to say the least.

President Hichilema and his Government has more than they can chew before them regards governing this nation towards attaining desired de velopment as per their many promises which seem to be more of sweet talk than reality.

Are we saying removal of President Lungu’s immunity is of importance more than sorting out power outages, ful filling free education promis es, students’ meal allowances, reducing commodity prices as per their half-baked promises, reduction of price of fertiliser and the other numerous prom ises they gave?

We are surprised as an or ganisation to see such reckless manoeuvres by the new dawn government which we feel is aimed at diverting the atten tion of the expectant Zambians from the failure to uphold their many promises to the is sue that to us is not important and paramount looking at the many pertinent matters before us. And if President Hichilema is going to buy into that idea by that clique of disorganised but politically-organised cadres, then we expect nothing but a brutal regime.

We therefore call on the President to seriously have a time of reflection and serious introspection before buying into that idea if he desires to be among the heroes and hero ines of this great country.

He is certainly treading on seriously slippery ground and may haunt him in the near future.
