Nothing wrong with lawyers eyeing DPP job - Mweetwa

- By ADRIAN MWANZA

THERE is nothing sinister or wrong for UPND lawyers eyeing the position of Director of Public Prosecutions if they are qualified, UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has said.

Mr Mweetwa however said he had not heard of any member of the UPND legal team positioning themselves for the post.

He was reacting to recent comments from Economic Front (EF) Secretary General, Wynter Kabimba, who claimed there was a conspiracy aimed at ousting the DPP, Ms Lillian Siyuni who has been reported to the Judicial Complaints Commission ( JCC) for alleged misconduct.

Mr Mweetwa said that he was part of the UPND legal team and had never heard of anyone positioning themselves for that position.

“I’m part of that team but what I can tell you is that I have not heard anything of that sort and if at all there is anything of that nature then it is news,” he said.

He said that there was nothing wrong for qualified lawyers and Zambians to position themselves for the position of DPP because they are qualified.

Mr Mweetwa said that the issue was straight forward and that the UPND had lawyers who would deliver if they were given an opportunity.

“As things stand the position of DPP is not available since there is a capable person but I just want to dispel the rumours that there are individuals pushing the head of State to fire Ms Siyuni for them to be given the position because they helped him the time he was in opposition,” he said.

However, Mr Kabimba last week said the UPND was working with the MMD who they were using as a surrogate in a move to hound out Ms Siyuni.
