Work on the Nkeyema-Mongu road, govt urged

- By ANDREW MUKOMA in Mongu

WHILE all roads were this week leading to Mongu, Western Province to witness the cerebrated Kuomboka traditional ceremony of the Lozi speaking people, most motorists have endured the distance between Nkeyema and Mongu which has been prolonged due to the deplorable state of the road.

Motorists travelling from Lusaka to Mongu have lamented the poor state of the road with many of those talked too urging the New Administration to quickly move in and work on the road.

The Nkeyema- Katunda and going beyond heading to Mongu has been ripped off causing tear and wear on motorists’ vehicle.

Over the last few days, the road has seen an increase in the number of vehicles using it heading to Mongu for the Kuomboka traditional ceremony.

Mr Elijah Mubiana, a Lusaka resident told the Daily Nation that government should pay attention to the complaints of people of Western Province over the poor state of the road.

Mr Mubiana said, “This road is a very important commercial road that over 70 per cent of travellers coming from East to West make use of on a daily basis. Its bad condition is giving us serious concern, especially this period that a lot of people are using it because of the ceremony.”

“It is hampering free flow of movement in and out of Mongu and other towns. Traffic is always chaotic especially now,” he said.

“If government can provide some palliative measures, it will go a long way to ease the suffering especially this period that our people are coming home,” he said .

Another motorist, Raphael Muyunda on his part, said the state of the road has forced people to abandon their cars and jump on public transport.

The status quo was also similar to those coming from Livingstone getting into Mongu due to the bad state of the Kazungula Sesheke road.
