ZCTU calls on government to invest in value addition
The government must ensure that it promotes value addition as a way of creating decent jobs, ZCTU representative, Adrian Moonga, has said.
Mr. Moonga made the observation during the commemoration of the International Labour Day which was held under the theme ‘accelerating social economic transformation through sustainable and decent job creation amidst of Covid-19.”
He observed that sectors such as mining and agriculture can be developed to enhance value addition.
He said that once value addition is enhanced, decent jobs will be created along the value chain.
Mr. Moonga further bemoaned the high cost of living which he said had negatively affected performance and productivity. He said that despite the escalating cost of living workers’’ salaries had remained static.
He therefore called on the government to come up with measures that are going to cushion the negative impact of the prevailing harsh economic conditions.
And Chongwe member of parliament, Sylvia Masebo implored those in employment to show high levels of commitment.
She observed that the over 130, 000 applications for the health worker jobs received in the ongoing recruitment was clear that the country had a serious employment crisis.
She therefore challenged those who were in employment to count themselves privileged and show extra commitment.
She particularly challenged government employees to serve the public with diligence and integrity.
Meanwhile, Chongwe District Commissioner, Elias Lupiya urged employees to remain committed to contributing to economic and social transformation of the country.
