When will Pax Africana begin?

- Dear Editor, MIKE CHUNGU.

MAY 25, 2022 marked 59 years of the founding of the African Union (AU), originally known as Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

OAU was founded by Africa’s luminaries including Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Julius Kambarage Nyerere of Tanza nia and our own father of the Nation, Kenneth Kaunda. Im mediately after its formation, the OAU embarked on the de colonisation project.

The decolonisation project came to its logical conclusion with the end of the racist and minority rule in South Africa in 1991, and AU refocussed her attention on African economic empowerment project.

Africa, where are we today? There are three views ranging from afro-pessimism to af ro-optimism and others who stand in the grey area between two extreme views.

We have had experiments in cluding the Stalinist one-party systems which were initiated in 60s through the 80s to curb the ethnically motivated violence.

This was coupled with (mis) managing command econo mies which choked the role of the private sector. The African intelligentsia have had to leave in their droves to develop the colonial masters because the home climate is repressive.

When the one party-system lost legitimacy in the early 90s, we thought and felt that Africa was again on the Pax Africana journey. We were mistaken.

The multi-party democratic model has failed to replace the party with people; instead what we have is mafia-cracy or what other political theorists call “Kleptocracy.”

What Africa should do is al ready envisioned in the Africa Agenda 2063. Africa must act continentally promoting in tra-free trade and investment otherwise, the next generation will be clapping when the An glo American announce invest ment pledges which are tied to no or little home country beneficiation.

Dear mother Africa, I wish you peace and dignity.
