Monze council starts drilling 30 boreholes, rehabilitating 70
True freedom achievable only when public and private sectors join forces
MONZE Town Council has embarked on the drilling of 30 bore holes and rehabilitation of 70 dysfunctional ones in the district under the UNICEF SUN11 sponsored project.
Public relations Officer, Kanchele Kanchele said the project which started on May 23, 2022 was expected to be completed in October, 2022.
He said in a statement that the contractor was already in the district to commence the borehole drilling and rehabilitation works.
Mr. Kanchele said the 30 boreholes would be drilled and equipped with hand pumps in selected wards of the districts and the 70 nonfunctional boreholes in various wards would also be rehabilitated. He said the contractor has also been tasked to ensure that the water quality in the boreholes which would be rehabilitated was of consumable standard for humans.
Mr Kanchele said the project would also mean that more peo ple would stop sharing water points with domestic animals.
He urged beneficiaries of the boreholes to guard the facilities jealously and ensure that mechanisms are put in place for them to stand the test of time so that council is given room to channel resources to other areas.
NDOLA Chambers of Com merce president, Paul Chis unka says true freedom is achievable when the public and private sectors combine forces in eliminating hunger at domestic level.
Mr. Chisunka says this can be done by jointly leveraging national resources and other endowments such as land, water resources, and tradi tional and non-traditional crops.
In an interview of the side lines commemorating 2022 Africa Freedom day held un der the theme: “Leveraging National resources for en hanced food security, “the chamber president there is need for everyone to work to gether and eliminate all forms of hunger in the country.
He calls on government ensure the agricultural sector is further liberalized by mak ing the acquisition of farming land easier and cheaper for Zambians.
He called for more investment in cold chains, grain storage, commodity exchang es, reliable and affordable power supply to farm blocks and rural to that accelerate mechanization.
Mr. Chisunka adds gov ernment should also provide farmers with more extension services, pest and disease control services.
Mr. Chisunka, who paid tribute to Ndola based free dom fighters, stresses that the country’s food security can further be guaranteed through long term afforda ble agro-finance, inexpensive farming inputs, and uptake of new technologies.
He emphasised exposure to improved farming tech niques, marketing, commer cializing of traditional farm ing knowledge, continuous scientific research, and the strengthening of linkages be tween small holder farmers and commercial farmers.
