Farewell to Sikota Wina the freedom fighter

- Dear Editor, ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

SIKOTA Wina, the freedom fighter, politician and former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly died on Wednesday June 15, 2022 at the University Teaching Hospital after an illness.

He died at the age of 90. The history of the country’s independence is incomplete without the name Sikota Wina. He was one of the freedom fighters who fought for the attainment of independence in 1964 from the oppressive colonial rule.

Mr Wina was a politician whose political career dates back to the pre pre-independence era. One thing about the late politician’s political journey was that it was not a rollercoaster.

It was rough as he was arrested for his involvement in politics but he never relented in fighting for the freedom we are enjoying today.

The late politician, whose death we are celebrating was also passionate about education. He attended Kafue Training School. He later proceeded to Munali Secondary School where he completed his high school before pursuing his tertiary education.

The accomplished politician was also a journalist and author. He wrote a book entitled: “A night without a President.” The book talks about late President Kenneth David Kaunda who resigned as President in 1968.

Mr. Wina served as Member of Parliament for Luanshya and Chililabombwe under the United National Independence Party (UNIP) and the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) respectively.

Mr. Wina also served as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly but he resigned this high profile position in 1994.

He was married to Princess Naganda Nakatindi and his wife died some years ago.

The veteran politician is gone but his legacy will outlive him. He served this country well and the current crop of politicians should emulate this great son of Zambia.

Mr. Wina fought a good fight and he ran his race. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
