Explain failure to deliver on promises, government told

…as farmers bemoan high fertiliser price

- By JOHN KOMBE

GOVERNMENT must not take people for granted, but explain its failure to deliver on its key campaign promises, a concerned citizen has said.

Mr James Daka of Chainda ward in the Katende area of Chongwe has described the high prices of commodities as heartbreaking.

Mr Daka said that the UPND government promised to lower the cost of living immediately it came into power and as such calls by sympathisers that they be given time was unreasonable.

He said that the people voted for change and not explanations and lectures about the economics of prices and inflation.

Mr. Daka, who is a small-scale farmer said that the price of fertiliser was also unaffordable for an ordinary citizen. He said that the UPND is on record as having promised to lower the price to as low as K250.00 per 50 kg bag, but had gone mute on the matter.

He said politicians must learn to explain any failures and ask for forgiveness when they fail to deliver on their promises. He said that keeping quiet or dodging reality will not solve the problem.

Mr Daka said that it was because of this tendency of ignoring the cries of the people that the UPND was fast losing popularity.

He said the UPND government must wake up to the reality that the cost of living is very high and many cannot afford decent meals in a day. He said that this is despite the party promising to transform the economy.

And another farmer of Katoba ward who sought anonymity said the government was not being sincere on the FISP exercise. He accused the government of disrupting the input distribution to suit its own agenda.

He said that the farmers were eagerly waiting for inputs and were not happy that all they were hearing was cancellation of fertiliser supply tenders.
