WOMAN COMMITTED TO HIGH COURT OVER TODDLER’S DEATH

- By LUCY PHIRI

THE Lusaka magistrate court has committed the 22-year-old woman of Kitwe who allegedly killed her twoyear-old son by suffocating him with a pillow to the High Court.

Musowe Maeke is charged with one count of murder contrary to section 200 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Maeke appeared before magistrate Kawama Mwamfulu who read and explained the charge to her.

It is alleged that Maeke stayed at a lodge in Lusaka’s Kamwala South for three days after being chased by her sister.

Her sister had given Maeke transport money to go back to Kitwe.

It is also alleged that the accused opted to stay in Lusaka at the lodge for three days before she killed her son after she failed to provide for him and herself.

It is alleged that the suspect later took her child to her elder sister and told her that she had killed him because she had nothing to feed him.

The elder sister with relatives then rushed to Chilenje hospital where the toddler was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon arrival.

When the matter came up yesterday for explanation of the charge, State prosecutor Lewis Loti informed the court that the consent to commit the matter to the high court was ready.

“The indictment has been substituted and the consent from Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to prosecute the matter is ready before the court,” he said.

Magistrate Mwamfuli committed the matter to the high court for commencement of plea.

It is alleged that Maeke on August 13, 2022 in Lusaka jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown did murder the child under the age of 16
