STOP KILLING ALBINOS

- Dear Editor, ELEMIYA PHIRI Lusaka.

ALBINOS are human beings and they have the right to life but, the unfortunate part is that they are brutally murdered and some of their body parts are removed for ritual purposes. This is not right.

There is a widely held notion or rather the growing myth that some body parts of albinos can make a person rich. I rebut such a myth because there is no such a thing like the person becoming rich merely by using some body parts of the albinos. This is a fallacy.

In the recent past, there have been incidences where some albinos have been slain and their body parts removed. The case in point is that of the 73 year old albino woman of Muchinga Province who was attacked by unknown people. Her assailants remove her teeth and some of her fingers were chopped off.

The continued brutal murder of albinos across Zambia is indeed a source of concern. Surely, something must be done to sternly deal with perpetrators of such a heinous crime.

Albinos did not choose to be born with the condition of albinism. It is something that occurs due to lack of melanin cells which give rise to complexion of the person; it determines whether the person will be dark or brown. In a nutshell, albinism is genetically implying that it is transmitted from one of the parents who has some characteristics of albinism to the unborn child. Normally, this occurs during fertilisation. Let me not dwell so much on this subject.

The gist of the matter is that success comes through hard work, focus and discipline. The mere possession of body parts of the albino cannot make someone rich. So, people should stop killing albinos for rituals in order to become rich.

Albino Foundation of Zambia (AFZ) president. John Chiti who is also a musician has bemoaned the increased cases of albinos being killed in our country. He said that albinos are human beings who have the right to life and these people deserve protection from the relevant authorities.

In my conclusion, I wish to make an earnest appeal to people to desist from killing albinos on the hope of becoming rich. In another vein, the people living with albinism must be protected and the murderers of albinos must be nabbed to face the full wrath of the law.

People who slain albinos must be cognisant of the fact that they are potential parents of albinos because they might sire or rather bear an albino child one day.

The perpetrators of murdering of people living with albinism for ritual purposes must be arrested and ultimately prosecuted so that they can face the full wrath of the law.
