KANSANSHI SEEKS RUGBY SPONSORSHIP

- By SPORTS REPORTER

KANSANSHI Rugby Club general secretary Chansa Mulenga says it is their hope that Kansanshi Mine will renew the sponsorship deal to enable the team compete in the 2023 elite National Rugby League (NRL) season.

Kansanshi clinched the promotion place to the NRL from the Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) presidential league after they settled for the second position.

Kansanshi managed 30 points after seven wins, a draw and two losses in 10 matches they played and they were six points below league winners Green Buffaloes, who also won promotion to the elite league.

Kansanshi was four points ahead of third positioned Nkwazi, who missed out on a promotion chase.

In an interview yesterday, Mulenga said it was the club’s hope that the mine would renew the sponsorship and also the executive intended to write to other companies for sponsorship.

“After winning the promotion for the first time, as a club we need to improve on time management, strategic planning as well as discipline. Of course, we are going to manage travelling to fulfill the fixtures. We are hoping that our sponsor Kansanshi Mine will renew the sponsorship deal next year and also we are intending to engage other sponsors to come on board and support the club,” Mulenga said.

Mulenga said the club was targeting Stanbic Bank, BHL and Mutanda Farms among other companies as possible sponsors.

Mulenga stated that given enough sponsorship like any other team, Kansanshi Dragons could play good rugby, adding that the team was not scared of big outfits in the league.

He noted that the team had a crop of young players who were energetic and playing without fear.

He said it would be important to see the senior team play the national league for the first time from North-Western Province.

Kansanshi the only team from North-Western Province will join champions Red Arrows, “Powerhouse” Lusaka, Green Eagles of Kabwe, “Men at work” Diggers, Kitwe Playing Fields, Buffaloes and Mufurila Leopards in the Topeight elite league.

Ndola Wanderers and Konkola got relegated and will feature in the presidential league.
