PRESIDENT PETER SINKAMBA, WHERE ARE WE WITH YOUR MINING INVESTMENT?

- Dear Editor, MIKE CHUNGU.

THE October 18, 2022 Daily Nation Forum page featured a passionate appeal by Nkana MP, Binwell Mpundu (Umwina Nkana) for an emergency, but practical mining recovery plan for Mopani Copper Mines and KCM Plc. so that there is economic regeneration for the people of the Copperbelt Province.

I have been a very keen follower of the Nkana MP; almost his disciple and can bear witness that Umwina Nkana has focussed on this theme with the zeal that the matter deserves since stepping into the August House.

I just want to add to the appeal. Early this year, the Green Party President, Mr Peter Sinkamba announced that a group of Zambians with deep pockets had worked out an investment offer for the two mining giants and pledged to keep updating the nation on the progress of implementation of this offer to the government.

There were two updates and the plan went into silence and it now seems the plan is now packed in a morgue, we need to know.

In the recent past, Mr Sinkamba seems to be spending more time in the Constitutional Court fighting for a clear position on the legality of the October 21, 2022 of constitutionalism in Zambia.

It is not my intention to engage him on what is the Green Party’s key focus, because he is a politician and can pick on matters that his party feels require investment because of their high rate of returns to the country and to themselves and their allies.

It is fair however for us to hold him and other leaders both in government and opposition to account for their promises and pledges. Recovery of the MCM and KCM Plc. is very crucial, perhaps even more crucial than the legality of the 21 by-elections for Kabushi and Kwacha.
