Crime worries varsity students

- By KALOBWE BWALYA

STUDENTS at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University say they’ll be moving with stones as a way of protecting themselves from being attacked by criminals who were grabbing phones and laptop bags in Lusaka’s Chainama and PHI area.

Last week, a student identified as Bupe had her phone grabbed whilst talking to someone and the incident happened in the morning within the PHI area.

Bupe narrated that criminals managed to grab her phone and when she screamed the Toyota Vitz car they were in had already sped off.

She said was left traumatised because she never saw that coming especially that it was in the morning and people were going for work.

“I was left traumatised because I did not see that coming I thought the car had just parked for something else, little did I know that they were criminals,” said Bupe.

Another student had his laptop bag grabbed around the Chainama Minestone area when four men walked out of a car and started chasing him together with his friend.

Cephas Chanda said that before he could realise it, is mobile phone including laptop bag which contained important documents had already been grabbed.

He said he screamed for help, but the criminals had already sped off into Great East Road which left him shivering.

Chanda also explained that the criminals have also taken advantage by attacking students within Chainama premises and were moving in different cars.

Chanda cautioned fellow students to be cautious of vehicles that parked by the roadside as well as moving moving slowly as those they could be carrying criminals.

“Criminals area using all sorts of criminal tactics just to steal phones especially moving vehicles and many students have since lost valuables through such, therefore we have since resorted to be moving with stones in our pockets so that we protect ourselves from being attacked,” said Chanda

Meanwhile, police deputy spokespersons Danny Mwale has warned that police will not hesitate to arrest anyone found wanting.

Mr Lungu however appealed to the general public to quickly report such matters to police so that the command can be alert.
