Media Network Action on Climate Change expectant of major breakthrough at COP 27
THE Media Network Action on Climate Change (MENACC) is highly expectant of major breakthrough at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) starting today in Egypt.
MENACC Executive Coordinator Kennedy Phiri said the network was confident that African countries through the African Group of Climate Change Negotiators (AGN) have adequately prepared for the conference and would therefore achieve the needed results for the continent.
Mr. Phiri said Africa was the least contributor to Greenhouse Gas Emissions but the worst hit by the effects of climate change hence the need for Africa leaders to put up a good case to begin to unlock the financing gap towards adaptation and mitigation.
He said in a statement that Africa requires around $86.5 billion by 2030 for adaptation alone as revealed by the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Mr. Phiri said unless the developed countries begin to release pledged finances towards adaptation and mitigation, the lives of millions of Africans hang in balance from the devastating severe increase in temperatures and varied rainfall.
He said MENACC notes with regret that developed countries have not met the $100 billion annual goal towards climate financing as agreed at COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland, therefore, COP 27 presents yet another opportunity to ensure the swift implementation of the climate finance delivery plan.
Mr. Mwanza said MENACC also urges the AGN to achieve answers for Africa’s already fragile food security arising from the worrying 34 percent decrease in agricultural productivity on the continent.
