Man torches house, shoots three, self

FOUR people of the same family have died after their house was allegedly set ablaze while three other people on a rescue mission were shot at by the suspect identified as Jethro Makondo.

Deputy police spokespers­on, Danny Mwale said Dorothy Ngandu, one of the three gunshot victims was unfortunat­ely pronounced dead upon arrival at Monze Mission Hospital while the other two are receiving treatment.

Mr. Mwale said in a statement that the suspect later went back to his house within the same community and shot himself through the mouth using his gun and died instantly.

He said Police rushed to the scene and discovered that four people from one family were burnt inside the house which was allegedly torched by Mr Makondo aged 74 of the neigbourin­g village within Majata in Pemba.

Mr. Mwale said the victim have since been identified as Josephine Hanyakama aged 82, her daughter Lenifer Ngandu aged 57, a Juvenile Nene Ngandu aged eight and Hope Nyumba aged 12.

Mr. Mwale said a Juvenile aged 13 managed to escape from the fire but sustained multiple burns on his body and is admitted to Monze mission hospital.

He said the gunshot victims have been identified as Dorothy Ngandu aged 58 who sustained bullet wounds on her right shoulder and chest area, Ngandu Highes aged 44 who sustained gunshots wounds around the chest, a Juvenile aged 13 all of Majata village.

Mr Mwale said the gun which the suspect used to shoot himself and others has since been recovered by Police officers.

Mr. Mwale said the bodies of the victims including the suspect have been deposited in Monze mission hospital awaiting for postmortem.

He said preliminar­y investigat­ions indicate that Mr Makondo was the husband to Ms Jenipher Ngandu.
