MUMBI PHIRI’S FAMILY TO ENGAGE HRC

- By NATION REPORTER

INCARCERATED former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri’s family has decided to engage the Human Rights Commission (HRC) over her continued detention.

Some family members talked to by the Daily Nation said they would engage the Human Rights because their relative was not receiving fair treatment.

Ms Phiri has been hospitalised at Lewanika General Hospital from Monday last week and she is not being given adequate food needed for an individual with diabetes.

The members said that it was disheartening that even family members were not being allowed to see her but that they were denying to give her proper food.

The relatives said only after a life was lost that was when authorities would see the gravity of the matter because they did not take the matter seriously.

And PF acting president Given Lubinda said that even the party would write to the HRC due to the injustice Ms Phiri was receiving. Mr Lubinda said he had spoken to some family members who had indicated that they would go that route.

“Yes I can confirm that the party will write to the Human Rights Commission over the issue of Ms Phiri who is currently in hospital but is not being given the right treatment.

He said the party would lodge a complaint because Ms Phiri was unfairly treated and that justice needed to prevail.

And former Lands minister Jean Kapata said that it was now clear that they just wanted to punish her at all costs.

Ms Kapata said that everyone knew that Ms Phiri was innocent and that even her detention was just political.
