EXPLAIN CIVIL SERVICE CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

MUSHINDAMO District Commissioner Andrew Kalangwa has called on the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ) to explain the conditions and terms of civil service to its members so that they can work professionally.

The District Commissioner has also called on the union to keep giving government checks and balances to ensure civil service remains effective in delivery of services to the citizenry.

Speaking when a team of CSAWUZ provincial leadership paid a courtesy call at his office, Mr Kalangwa said the civil service cannot do without unions because they advise government on labour matters.

He said it is in this line that the union should take up the responsibility of explaining the conditions of service to its members so that they get acquainted to it. “Most of people in the public sector do not know the conditions and terms of service and that’s why as a union you should take up this responsibility to explain to them,” said Mr Kalangwa.

He said the union should continue to guide civil servants especially those that want to involve themselves in political matters.

And CSAWUZ provincial Chairperson, Vincent Hanyama says they are in the district to sensitize their members on various matters including work culture, adherence to code of ethics and to put a work place committee in place.

Mr Hanyama emphasised the need to have a disciplined civil service and that the union is there to ensure this is done.

“And as CSAWUZ we have decided to come up with a work place committee to increase the flow of information that would address challenges locally if they don’t need attention of the national executive so that they are quickly resolved,” he said.

He also encouraged members to read the code of ethics, disciplinary code, and terms and conditions of work so that they can know their rights and entitlements as civil servants.

He stated that civil servants must also avoid use of social media to air their grievances as this is not a professional way of resolving matters.
