PAY TEACHERS THEIR OWED EMOLUMENTS, GOVT URGED

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

THE Special Education Teachers Union of Zambia (SPETUZ) has expressed sadness that to date, the payment of personal emoluments owed to teachers by the government has not been done.

SPETUZ president Frankson Musukwa says all these delays were happening while the cost of living was rising daily.

Dr Musukwa said this was happening at the backdrop of the Emoluments Act which was assented to by the President on April 8, 2022 and came into effect on July 6, 2022.

"It is saddening to learn that many teachers across the country have not been paid their owed emoluments such as settling in allowances, transfers, and leave days," he said.

"This process has not been done in all the Provinces and districts. We call upon the Government to complete this process so that teachers are paid all their owed allowances," Dr Musukwa said.

He has also raised concerns over the delays by Government to implement the Presidential directive meant to reunite married couples who are working and living separately in different locations

On October 5, 2022 during the commemoration of World Teachers Day, President Hakainde Hichilema directed the Secretary to Cabinet to ensure that guidelines and procedures are set and enforced by November 2022 to start the process of reuniting civil servants separated from their families due to transfers.

However, since the directive was made, not much has been done much to the concern of the labour movement.

Dr Musukwa has observed that while this was a very good move and motivating to teachers, the union is concerned with the delays in its implementation.
